RE: Just towed my TT for the trip and I have questions...

I experienced the same thing with my TT and my Expedition. So, I traded it in on a used Excursion and am extremely happy. I just towed it for the first time for 150 miles, and some decent grades, and could not even tell that the trailer was back there! I went with the Excursion primarily for the extra space inside, as I now have 3 labs, 2 kids and a DW (who is the one that keeps rescuing the dogs). Great prices on them now, with the fuel prices, which also bit me on trying to sell the Expy, which is why I traded it in. I also wanted a TV that was heavier than or close to the weight of the TT (may sound weird). Now that I have a better TV, maybe I can start looking at a bigger TT!

RE: How long does it take to set up your TT?

I am with the others. We can have it all set up in 1/2 hour or less. That includes rear slide out, table and sofa up and awning out. When adding the tent room, I need an additional 15 minutes and 2 beers!

RE: Need Help Buying Our First Travel Trailer

As I went through your same thought process last year, I would suggest that you look at as many models as you can. I ended up with the rear slide Wildwood, and it was pushing the limit once it was fully loaded. Once I added two labs, and two kids, it was at the limit. I since have traded in my Expedition for an Excursion (something that I wanted to do from the beginning). Now the weight is not an option. I looked at several models similar to the one I got, but each had plusses and minuses. The layout of this one was exactly what we were looking for. Don't listen to salesperson on what you can tow, you may be able to tow it off of the lot, but wait until you hit the first hill. I agree with everyone and the 80% rule. Also, keep making a list of what you like and don't like of each model that you see. We started with a very small "needs" list that grew each time. The keys for me (weight, size, bunks) were not the same as those of DW (counterspace). Know what the wants are as opposed to the needs. If you settle, make sure that you are settling on not getting a want, and not a need. I looked at dozens of manufacturers and models before finding this one. We have used it several times and really enjoy it. Good luck!

RE: Tow vehicle...need your input about this.

I would look into the future at what you want to tow, not what can tow your pup now. I had a Jayco 1206 pup that I towed easily with the V-8 Expedition. The only time that I had problems towing it with my V6 mini van was taking it to Wyoming. Inclines were a killer. I would look at where you are looking at camping as well as what the next unit will be. I upgraded to a TT last year, which had a GVWR of 7500 #'s and the Expedition had a little trouble with it on the passes (with 2 adults, 2 kids and 2 labs in vehicle). So, I just upgraded the TV into a V-10 Excursion and will not have any problems. Bottom line, it depends on what you think you will tow (figure no more than 80% of total tow capacity to be safe) and where you are going. Good luck!

RE: Selling your RV

I advertised my tent trailer on rvtraderonline, craigslist and the local paper. The first hit was from Craigslist, but the most, and eventual buyer, was from the paper.

RE: Which one to choose?

We have a 250RS (Wildwood model) and love it. Pluses are the counter space and 25 foot towing of a 29 foot trailer. Minuses are the "cramped" space in the queen bed. It doesn't bother us, as we traded up from a tent trailer, but it has some of the folks I know.

RE: New buyer of Maxlite 23 RS

Congrats and enjoy! I have seen some bike racks that can go in front, but can't you add to the spare tire? If you have a rear slide, you will have to take the bikes off before, but that may work for you. I have not gotten that far!

RE: Help! weight distribution set-up

Are you getting the hitch at the same place as the trailer? If so, have them walk you through it. I did that it made me feel a lot better. I even had them look at it again when I had it in to get the screen room added on, and they dropped one extra link. Now I am dropping three. It made a lot of difference in towing!

RE: First trip of the season!

We have several lakes within 30 miles of our house. This time went to Woodward Lake, about 10 minutes from the house. I like to take smaller runs at the start of the season to see what I forget! And when I figure it out, I can run home to get it! Besides DW wanted to stay home, so she has my daughter and one of the dogs, and my son and I took off with the other dog.

First trip of the season!

:C
Well, we took the trailer out for the first trip of the season. Just took it to a lake a few miles from home - figured the gas wasn't worth going to far. Nice and relaxing. Getting ready to throw the lines in the water and relax some more! Did put up the new tent room for the first time - glad not too many lookiloos around to laugh! Next time should be a lot easier, and won't have the DW complaining to me too much.
Happy camping to all!

RE: Shopping for r 1st TT

We went to several dealers and looked at numerous units before finding the one we felt was the best. My suggestion is to go into as many as you can and note the things that you like and don't like. I then listed the "must haves", such as bunks, size and weight, the the DW added hers, such as counter space, etc. Believe it or not, we finally found one that fit all of our requirements.

RE: Extension Mirrors

I have used three different kinds so far. I had some that strap on to the mirrors (used once and gone), then ones that slide on to the mirrors. Those were not bad, but I still did not feel comfortable with the viewing angle out of the passengers window. I now use the McKesh, and would recommend them to anyone. They give me the best view (especially with the optional convex). The only one thing that I would say is the problem, is that you need to be sure that they are cranked down real good or you will get some noise. Bottom line is that you need to use something that you are comfortable seeing down the side of the TT. Good luck!

RE: We finally did it!

Congratulations on the new TT. Make some memories and have some fun! Even though it is not the best weather, we have had several driveway camp-outs! (Little easier to do on an acre of property).

RE: Need Input - Suburban 2500 or Excursion - which to buy?

dougger222 - I have found a 2000 with the 7.3 in it, with 96,000 miles on it. They are asking around 18k for it, which is much higher than blue book. Is this because of the hard to find 7.3 (I realize this is only an opinion)? I am going to try and bargain down, or keep looking, but wanted your thoughts.

Thanks for all of the input. I was expecting a little more of a war between the Fords and Chevys, but got a lot of good information!

RE: What comes w/ new camper

The starter kit is just that - a starter kit. I have upgraded the hose it came with. Used the tank treatment and tp though. Invest in a good hose, as I have had to upgrade twice, due to the length issues.

I am actually looking for something used, with less than 70k miles on it. I've been looking at some under $20k.
